Dr. Cheryl Cable

We are extremely fortunate to have Dr. Cable as part of our team. Edmonton born and raised, Dr. Cable received a Bachelor of Science Degree, with honours from the University of Alberta in 1992. She went directly from graduating with a DDS with distinction from the University of Alberta in 1997 to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota for Prosthodontic and Maxillofacial Prosthodontic specialty training completed in 2001. She is the second Canadian to have completed training in this program. There are only two training programs in this field in North America – the other is a post specialty program at MD Anderson. The residency is four years in duration and only one resident is accepted every two years.

Her training covered the following areas by world renowned specialists: Anatomy, Biostatistics, Dental Materials, Dental Laboratory Techniques, Orofacial Pain, Medical Oncology, Oral Diagnosis, Otorhinolaryngologic Surgery, and Radiation and Medical Oncology. This is in addition to conventional and advanced Removable, Fixed and Maxillofacial Prosthodontics. The majority of the patients seen in these clinics were seeking second and more professional opinions on extremely complex and life threatening clinical situations. They travelled from around the world and were at points of complete exasperation. She has seen patients with devastating life situations and have helped them function and achieve results they did not think possible. For that she is incredibly grateful.

Dr. Cable is a board certified specialist in Prosthodontics (Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada – obtained at the first possible opportunity after her specialty education was completed) – with advanced training in Maxillofacial Prosthodontics. The mission of The Royal College of Dentists of Canada is to maintain the high standards of practice of the recognized dental specialties by examining qualified candidates for admission to Fellowship in the College and by working with stakeholders to establish standards for dental specialty education, practice and certification. In addition, Dr. Cable works for the Provincial Government of Alberta on a dental consultant basis.

Prosthodontics, also known as dental prosthetics or prosthetic dentistry, is one of nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association, Royal College of Dentists of Canada, and Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons. Prosthodontics is the dental specialty pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of the oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues using biocompatible substitutes. Maxillofacial prosthodontists treat patients who have acquired and congenital defects of the head and neck (maxillofacial) region due to cancer, surgery, trauma, and/or birth defects. Treatment is multidisciplinary, involving oral and maxillofacial surgeons, plastic surgeons, head and neck surgeons, ENT doctors, oncologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals.

Dr. Cable works as part of a multidisciplinary team of dental and surgical specialists who treat patients with severe functional impairment and utilize their extensive training in various areas to restore function. Dr. Cable uses her private practice time to work as a Maxillofacial Prosthodontist and is proud to assist her fellow Albertans in the rehabilitation efforts.

She has been fortunate to previously work at COMPRU and iRSM with Dr. John Wolfaardt, one of her mentors who she first met in 1993 as a dentistry student at the University of Alberta. Dr. Wolfaardt introduced Dr. Cable to the field of Maxillofacial Prosthodontics and encouraged her to apply to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota for a formal residency.

Dr. Cable recognizes the leadership and pioneer efforts of the several Prosthodontists with whom she has had the great opportunity and privilege to work with and have trained her to best help patients with comprehensive care in Alberta.
